Widely circulated footage appeared to show Jones making an obscene gesture at Jets fans, but Jones maintains he was actually signaling approval to Dallas supporters in attendance as his team clinched a decisive win.
“That was regrettable. That was essentially an interaction with Cowboys supporters out in front of us,” Jones explained during a radio appearance. “There was a large group of Cowboys fans—not New York fans, our fans. The entire stadium was filled with enthusiasm for the Cowboys.”
Jones additionally emphasized that the signal was completely unintentional, occurring amid the elation following the team’s last score. “I simply showed the wrong finger,” he noted. “It was inadvertently done. This is sincere. If you want to call it accidental, you can. However, it got corrected pretty quick.”

This is not the first time an league proprietor has been fined for misconduct. Recent cases include:
- Panthers proprietor Tepper was penalized $300K for throwing a drink at spectators in January 2024.
- Then Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams was issued a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a similar offensive signal.
Jones, who is recognized for his publicity flair, reportedly has an estimated wealth of $16 billion, so the penalty manageable for the billionaire owner.
